Barcode combines technology and social responsibility in a dating safety function intended as a feature within a dating app or OS. It was developed to provide support for modern daters that need a safe, efficient way to remove themselves from uncomfortable or dangerous situations. The evolution of dating apps has normalized meeting strangers from the internet and has consequently created a need for antidotal technology to combat increased safety concerns.

Background

In 2017, posters from women’s restrooms went viral that informed bar patrons that staff was there to help if their date wasn’t who they said they were or if they felt unsafe. By ordering an ‘angel shot’ neat, on ice, or with lime a customer could discreetly ask the bartender to escort them out, call them a ride, or to call the police. I began to wonder how technology could be utilized to provide similar, immediate support for dating app users.

Swipe Left

In hearing the stories of dating app users, there was a common theme amongst the bad dates— there was a point at which they knew they should leave, but they didn’t know how to go about it. This moment is when Barcode can be used to initiate a sequence that notifies bar or restaurant staff, freezes your tab, and calls you a ride. Barcode is designed to communicate with the P.O.S. system at a bar or restaurant to notify staff, so that the user trying to make their exit doesn’t have to do so. By using a quick swipe left, an unfortunate right swipe can be quickly undone.

Research + Findings

Market research, interviews, and user testing was conducted in order to understand the ways in which Barcode ‘s experience and construction could be tailored thereto.

Problems

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Solutions

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
